Our history

1959 - 1972

VEB Kommunale Wohnungsverwaltung (KWV)

After two years of preparation, the KWV (Housing Association) was founded on October 1, 1959, with seven employees. Fifty-five houses were managed for the city, private individuals, and institutions. An additional 75 houses had been assigned as so-called public property. A total of 220 apartments were managed in Grevesmühlen. The years following the KWV's founding were marked by reconstruction. There was a housing shortage, and with limited building materials and construction capacity, apartments had to be repaired and new ones built. Later, the KWV's scope of responsibilities was steadily expanded.

VEB Gebäudewirtschaft Grevesmühlen

On January 1, 1972, the company was transformed into the state-owned housing company VEB Gebäudewirtschaft. New construction projects were financed through loans from the state bank. In the first year, 44 employees managed 1,281 apartments. With the large-scale housing construction projects of the 1970s and 80s, entire new residential areas were built, such as Ploggenseering, Grüner Ring, and Am Wasserturm. Nevertheless, the number of apartments was insufficient to adequately provide housing for the residents of Grevesmühlen; this would not be achieved until the 1990s. By 1984, the housing stock managed by the housing company had increased to approximately 2,000 apartments. At the end of 1989, the housing company employed 111 people. Its headquarters were located at August-Bebel-Straße 17.

Wohnungsbau- und Verwaltungsgesellschaft mbH Grevesmühlen (WOBAG)

With German reunification, the state-owned building management company (VEB Gebäudewirtschaft) was transformed into two limited liability companies (GmbHs): Gebäudewirtschaft GmbH and Wärmeversorgung GmbH. Based on the new legal framework, the former Gebäudewirtschaft GmbH became independent on September 18, 1991, and WOBAG Wohnungsbau- und Verwaltungsgesellschaft mbH (WOBAG Housing Construction and Management Company) was founded. The city remained the sole shareholder. In the years following 1991, large housing estates were modernized and new apartments were built. WOBAG adapted to the rising average age of the population by constructing senior housing. The development of single-family home sites and the construction of new housing also simultaneously addressed the needs of the younger generation.

New administrative headquarters in the Callies villa

For nearly 50 years, WOBAG was located at August-Bebel-Straße 17. In 2019, WOBAG purchased the villa built in 1880 for the merchant family Callies at August-Bebel-Straße 3-5. Most recently, the job center was housed there. Following extensive renovation and conversion, the impressive building has served as WOBAG's new headquarters since 2021. With modern workspaces and a customer-friendly reception area, WOBAG is ideally equipped to address contemporary challenges such as climate protection, digitalization, and restructuring.
